Wow, it has been since 2009 that a posting has happened in this Forum, gotta get it gon !

I need to find a Swap Shop in the Northeastern area of MA.

Reason is I do not have the time to do it myself.
Did my 88 with the help of friends but this one might take a while longer with the electronics.
A good Fab Shop would do too, I am still thinking on the 5.0L/NV4500/AtlasII swap so there could be more mods than usual.

thks/ltr,

DJaye,
Sorry, forgot about this thread and just run into it !

My truck is an 03 w/3.0L 5 sp.

Two main problems, computer vs turning off the trans function and Headers.
right now I know of one header manufacturer, Torque Monsters, but they are too pricey.

JBA used to make a set of headers, I think that is what Zoom has on his. But the last time I checked they were like 700 bucks. And what "trans function" are you talking about?

JBA made them for the 4.0, not sure if they do them for a 3.0 or not.

Check with these folks about computer reprogramming for auto trans performance. And five liter headers can be found from many Mustang performance vendors, including Jegs and Summit.

A Hedder that could be used that nobody really thinks about.. ' block hugger ' type.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G9063/

Im not sure about clearance in regards to the steering rod, but they should clear the frame. The main problem is finding a suitable ' Y ' pipe. You could always run a true dual type of exhaust..

You can shutoff the automatic tranny functions in the ECM. ( someone already mentioned this. ).

One thing to look into though and make sure your 100% positive.. EPA/Emissions for your area. I know M.A. is a very Liberal State, It wouldnt surprise me to see if they were close to what Cali and the DDC ( NY ) have on the books.

Im thinking on a new line SAS with small lift, maybe even a new frame if the price is right !

5.0/NV4500/Atlas II still there though, Not sure where this is going, money seems to be the gating factor and a good reliable shop to do the work or at least one that wont take you over the barrel.

Everything is up in the air, will tell more by mid summer, I hope.

Hey scrambler. Now that I have a 1996 Exploder I am over on Explorer Forum from time to time. Many people over there have performed V6 to V8 swaps on ranger based vehicles and rangers. Look at what Bob (rewenzig) did to his ranger (Explorer V8, tranny and now a blower). A quick search over there will give you plenty of good info for swapping a 5.0L into your ranger. I swapped a 347 into my already V8 explorer which wasn't as easy as it seems because there are many differences from an Explorer 5.0L to any other 5.0L. Distributor less ignition, oil pan, front accessories are unique (shorter). So I picked up a super cheap explorer 5.0L on fleaby and sent it out to an Engine builder to use donor parts on my 347. Torque monster headers are really the only good option out there.

So I will just say from what I have read your best option is to get an explorer 5.0L motor and the computer as a starting point. I see you want a manual trans and atlas. If you again want to simplify things go with the explorer 4R70W auto and then find a BW4406 manual transfer case from a 1997 - 2003 F150 that bolts up to the 4R70W you will also need to source driveshafts for that. That conversion has also been covered in pretty good detail on explorer forums by numerous people. If you had those parts you could then go to a shop and they would have much less work to do which = saving you money. Its still a big job and you still want to get torque monster headers for real gains over the crap stock manifolds. They are proven and should fit in a ranger with no difficulty.
